Causes, consequences and remediation of mould

The building biology experts from Baubiologie Magazin have written a very comprehensive article on the causes and consequences of mould and the possibilities of remediation. Here we give a short summary of the article, with the most important tips on how to avoid mould.

The causes of mold usually fall into three categories: Building defects and damage, building physics causes, and improper occupant behavior. While the first two issues always require structural intervention and the involvement of an expert is highly advisable, simple measures in daily life can often do much to improve the situation. These are, for example:

  • With a simple hygrometer thermometer, the air humidity can be checked regularly. Ventilate more strongly from a relative humidity of 60 %.
  • Warm air can absorb more moisture. Heat sufficiently in winter, ideally with radiant heaters such as wall heaters, baseboard heaters or “real” tile and ground stoves.
  • Ventilate properly: In the cold season, cross-ventilate for a few minutes with the windows and doors wide open (draught) – the colder the outside air is, the drier it is and the shorter the ventilation times can be.
  • Ventilation after activities such as showering, bathing, cooking, cleaning, etc. is also important. Also ensure ventilation in the bedroom, as people release a lot of moisture through breathing and perspiration.

A small but practical tip from us: Close the roller shutters/blinds at night, as the layer of air in front of the window has an insulating effect and the lower temperature difference allows less condensation to form.

If mould is already visible or health impairments give rise to the suspicion of (invisible!) mould, measures must be taken immediately. You will find an overview of the building biology options in the article „I see something you don’t see and it’s…? (Mould!)
